Apple: We Sold 4 Million iPhones In First 24 Hours

New iPhones

Apple put out a press release this morning, which said that it received more than four million pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the first 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. There were widespread problems, outages and slowdowns in the process according to numerous reports.

While the iPhone 6 is still widely available the 6 Plus is backordered. However this Friday Apple store customers will be able to buy them on site. The phones become available to customers in 20 more countries on September 26.

The company said pre-orders for the two iPhones “set a new record for Apple.”

While many Apple critics and Android fans see the phones as playing catch up to larger-screen Android devices there’s every indication that the public at large is indifferent to that argument and will make this a huge seller for Apple.

Early reviews have been very favorable for both devices but especially the larger 6 Plus. A flash online survey conducted immediately after the phones were announced last week found that 53 percent of survey respondents said they liked the new phone’s design.

Below is a chart from Piper Jaffray showing sales figures for each iPhone immediately after launch. The firm estimates a total of 6.5 million iPhone 6 phones have been sold already.
