After
posting higher than expected profits in 2012, Apple ranked No. 6 on today’s 2013 Fortune 500 list. Not only was this Apple’s first time among Fortune’s top ten companies, they were the only Silicon Valley technology company to break into this year’s top ten list since Hewlett-Packard fell to No. 15 after reportedly suffering the biggest loss of any Fortune 500 company.
Ranking companies by total revenue for their respective fiscal years, Fortune magazine released its annual list of Fortune 500 companies today with Walmart reclaiming first place after sliding to No. 2 in 2012. Other top ten repeats included Exxon, Chevron, Phillips 66, Berkshire Hathaway, General Motors, General Electric and Ford Motor.
Facebook made its first appearance on the list, barely making the cut holding at 482. Celebrating his 29th birthday next week, the Silicon Valley Mercury News reported that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was the youngest CEO of any Fortune 500 company. Second to Zuckerberg in the youngest-Fortune-500-CEO count was Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer who will turn 38 this month. Yahoo was down eleven spots this year, ranking 494 after coming in at 483 in 2012.
According to the Silicon Valley Mercury News report, the tech sector experienced a 5.8 percent drop in profits, but was still the fifth-best performing sector among ten sectors of the Fortune 500 list. Other technology companies with notable rankings, IBM (No. 20), Microsoft (No. 35), and, (No. 49) and Google (No. 55, up from 73).
